“ The British are coming, the British are coming!” Paul Revere is famous for warning the US rebels that the British had landed at the shore and were coming to fight and the story often includes the “British is coming” quote however it is just a legend. While Revere was a part of the team that rode to alert the militia that the British were coming he did it quietly. No one was yelling the information out. It was a covert action.

1. Paul Revere is actually an American. He was born in the colonies, Boston to be exact in 1734! He was to become a real live American hero but would not realize his fame during his lifetime.

2. Paul Revere was born to a black smith father and was a black smith in his own right. He became a member of the Sons of Liberty. He was involved in the Boston Tea Party and may have also been at the Boston Massacre. He was a very active member of the party since he was 21 years old.

3. The plan was that Paul Revere and several other riders would spread the word should the British decide to invade the colonies. “One if by land, two if by sea” a famous quote from the era is actually an explanation.

4. If Revere was to ride with two lanterns than the other Sons of Liberty would know that the British would arrive by sea, if the lantern was one than they were coming by land. This was a very important role in the revolution because knowing when and how the Brits were coming allowed the militia and the colonists to fight the Brits and win the battles of the initial attacks.

5. He almost did not make it to the destination because he was detained by British soldiers.

6. He fought in the American Army and hob knobbed with the likes of Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, John Adams and John Hancock. He is an American hero!

7. He actually did not become famous until a poem written by Longfellow was penned in 1861 about his heroics called Paul Revere’s Ride. He lived a humble life after the war as a Black Smith. The horse he rode during his famous ride was not even his own horse. He had to borrow the horse from a man named John Larkin a deacon at the Old North Church.

8. He had at least 13 children with 2 separate wives. He died in 1818.
