1. Spider monkeys are one of the most endangered types of monkeys in the world, meaning that there are not many of them left in the forests where they live. They are very large monkeys and they live very high in treetops where they easily swing from branch to branch. Check out these fun facts about spider monkeys and what makes them different from other monkeys you may see in the zoo.

How They Look

2. Spider monkeys are different from other monkeys in that they have very long arms and legs and very long tails. This is how you can easily recognize a spider monkey from other monkeys, and this is also how they got their name. Their arms and legs and their tails are so long that they look like spiders with their long legs. These long arms and legs are also very strong and this allows them to easily swing around in the jungle.

3. These types of monkey also have very large feet and hands and these too allow them to grip trees limbs. This keeps them safe when they’re in the very tops of tall trees.

How They Behave

4. Typically spider monkeys travel in groups of up to 35 or so, but when they go looking for food they usually do this alone. The reason that these monkeys stay very high in the treetops is that they can harvest food like berries and fruits from the tall branches. They also eat insects, leaves and flowers from trees and bushes where they live.

5. Spider monkeys are very intelligent and actually communicate with each other through sounds that often sound like barking. They may make this sound to call to other monkeys or when they’re in danger. They also communicate with their posture and body language, sometimes standing straight up to make themselves appear bigger to something that is threatening to them.

The Danger to the Spider Monkey

6. Some people in the areas where spider monkeys live actually eat them for food, and because of this they have been hunted for many years. They are now considered endangered because there are so few of them left in the jungles. They have also been used in laboratories to study how the disease malaria affects them, since they seem to react in the same way that humans do. This is another reason why they’re so rare and why so many have been taken out of the jungle in the past few years!
